WooCommerce Alt Text Guide: Product Image Alt Text at Scale
WooCommerce product images are WordPress media, so alt text lives in the Media Library. This guide covers setting it for one product, fixing many at once, and writing text that helps shoppers.
Add Alt Text to a Single Product Image
- Open the product in Products → All Products.
- In the Product image box, click the image to open the media dialog.
- Fill in Alternative Text on the right and save.
Do the same for each image in the Product gallery.
Fix Many Products at Once
Generate drafts with the product description from image tool or the alt text generator. Both run on your device, so product photos stay private. Then choose WooCommerce CSV when exporting.
The CSV has the columns SKU, Images and Image Alt Text. Two things you must do before importing it:
- Fill in the
SKUcolumn so rows match your products. - Replace the
REPLACE_WITH_IMAGE_URLplaceholder with each image's real URL.
Import into a staging copy or a handful of test products first, and back up your store. Check how your WooCommerce version and importer handle image columns before running a large import.
What Good Product Alt Text Looks Like
- Main image: product, colour and one key detail: "Navy wool crew-neck jumper on a white background".
- Gallery angles: say what differs: "Back view showing zip pocket".
- Variations: name the colour or size when it is visible.
- Skip "image of", never repeat the same text on every photo, and don't stuff keywords.
Run your texts through the free alt text checker to find duplicates and over-long lines. If you sell on Shopify too, see the Shopify alt text guide.
